Weeds are annoying. They not only make your lawn look worse, but they steal valuable nutrients from the grass seed that you planted! Weeds spread quickly and often grow faster and taller than grass. It may seem impossible to get rid of them, especially if you have a lawn full of weeds.

However, there is lawn treatment program & some ways to rid your lawn of weeds once and for all and keep your lawn weed-free for good. Here are some tips for removing those pesky weeds.

Removing Weeds in your Lawn

Removing weeds in your lawn can seem like a daunting task. Luckily, there are products and procedures specifically for dealing with weeds.

Fortunately for you, we’ve outlined the exact steps you need to take to rid your lawn of weeds once and for all.

Getting Rid of a Lawn Full of Weeds

Figure out what weeds you’re dealing with

There are many different types of weeds that grow in Georgia lawns. It’s important that you figure out what kind of weed you’re dealing with before you purchase a product to help kill them.

You might have multiple types of weeds in your yard. That’s fine: note them all. If you’re unsure of what type of weed you’re dealing with, take a picture of your weed and upload it to Google search. Or, ask us! We’ll tell you what kind of weeds you’re dealing with and how to get rid of them.

Use a post-emergent herbicide built specifically for your weeds

There are two major types of herbicide: pre-emergent and post-emergent herbicide.

Pre-emergentM herbicide can be thought of as preventative medicine, tackling weeds before they start to grow. Post-emergent herbicide is used to get rid of weeds that already exist.

Go to your local home & garden store and look for post-emergent herbicides that can kill the type of weed that you have. This should take care of your problem.

Make sure to follow the directions on the package carefully! If you don’t, your weeds may not go away. Not only that, you may risk harm to yourself or others.

Manually remove large weeds

Large weeds often grow in flower beds and on the perimeter of your lawn. These weeds should be removed manually and taken out at the root. Be careful to not leave any roots remaining, because they will grow back!

Don’t waste your time removing every little dandelion, though. There are post-emergent herbicides that can help get rid of those.

Preventing Weeds from Appearing

Pre-emergent herbicide

Pre-emergent herbicide is used to prevent weeds from taking hold in your lawn. These are incredibly useful for making sure that your lawn stays healthy and weed-free. Look for pre-emergent herbicides that are friendly to your type of grass.

Mow your grass high

It’s important to mow your grass high for several reasons. The first reason is for your lawn’s health: high grass doesn’t burn as easily. The other reason is that high grass can prevent weeds from growing easily. Weeds compete with grass for nutrients and sunlight, and long grass prevents weeds from getting enough of either.

Aerate your soil

Weeds love compacted low-moisture soil. In fact, they thrive in it. Grass, however, is a bit more sensitive to soil quality. By aerating your soil regularly year-round, you can make sure that your grass is able to get the nutrients and moisture it needs to grow.
